Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and it’s natural to have questions along the way.
Below are answers to questions you may have as you consider starting therapy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Before Therapy
-
I offer a free 20-minute phone or video consultation so we can briefly discuss what you’re looking for, talk through your questions, and consider whether my approach, training, and experience feel like a good fit. If I’m not the right fit, I’ll do my best to point you toward another therapist or resource.
-
Yes. I want you to feel comfortable and informed as you consider whether my approach, training, and experience are the right fit for what you’re looking for. A free 20-minute consultation gives us time to talk through your questions and see whether working together feels like a good fit. If more time is needed, we can discuss the best next step.
-
Yes. Before your first session, you’ll receive emails through Jane, my secure electronic health record system, inviting you to set up your profile and complete your intake and consent forms.
Please complete these forms before your first session so we can make the best use of our time together. If you run into any trouble, you’re welcome to email me at rachel@true-northcounselling.ca.
-
I work with adults aged 18 and older in individual thearpy.
-
No. In Ontario, social workers do not provide psychological diagnoses or prescribe medication. If you are looking for diagnostic clarification or medication support, I can help you think through possible next steps, such as connecting with a family doctor, nurse practitioner, psychologist, or psychiatrist.
Areas of Focus
-
Therapy for ADHD may focus on procrastination, overwhelm, rejection sensitivity, difficulty following through, and the shame or inner critic that can come from years of feeling like you “should” be able to do things differently.
Together, we’ll build practical tools that fit the way your brain works, while making space for more self-compassion and a gentler way of understanding yourself.
-
Anxiety can feel like your mind is always switched on, constantly scanning for what might go wrong or what needs your attention. Therapy can help you settle your body and mind, build coping strategies, and learn to relate to your thoughts and emotions in a way that gives you more space to pause and choose how you respond.
-
OCD can feel like an exhausting loop of intrusive thoughts, uncertainty, and compulsions. Together, we’ll work at your pace to face what feels overwhelming, loosen the grip of compulsions, and create more room for the life you want to be living.
-
Depression can drain your energy, motivation, and sense of purpose, making even the smallest things feel heavy. Together, we’ll make space to explore what’s underneath, build small and sustainable steps forward, and gently reconnect with hope, meaning, and what matters to you.
-
That’s completely okay. You don’t need to have everything neatly labelled to reach out for support. Whether it’s stress, perfectionism, emotional ups and downs, self-doubt, or difficulty with boundaries, if something feels off, stuck, or heavier than it needs to, we can explore it together.
-
Ever notice how one part of you feels ready to move forward, while another part feels unsure? Internal Family Systems (IFS) recognizes that we can have different inner parts, each with their own feelings, needs, and protective roles.
My work is informed by IFS, and I am currently completing Level 1 training through the IFS Institute. Instead of fighting these parts or trying to push them away, we approach them with curiosity and compassion, making space to better understand why they show up and what they may need. This can help reduce inner conflict and support a more grounded, connected sense of self.
Policies
-
I ask for at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations or appointment changes. Missed appointments, cancellations, or changes made with less than 24 hours’ notice will be charged the full session fee.
-
For virtual or phone sessions, please choose a private, quiet space where you feel safe and comfortable speaking freely. This helps protect your confidentiality and allows you to be more present in the session.
For safety reasons, I am not able to provide therapy while you are driving. If you’re unsure whether a space will work, we can talk about it ahead of time.

Therapy tends to work best when it feels collaborative. You do not need to arrive with everything figured out, but a few things that can help include:
Attending sessions consistently
Being open to reflection and trying new tools
Sharing feedback about what feels helpful, or not helpful, in session
We can also talk together about what helps you feel prepared and supported as therapy unfolds.
-
That’s completely okay. You don’t need to come to therapy with everything figured out or a clear agenda every time. Some sessions may start with something specific, while others may begin with a simple check-in. We can slow things down together, notice what feels important, and gently explore what’s been coming up lately. I’ll help guide the conversation when needed.

Many insurance plans cover counselling with a Registered Social Worker (RSW), though every plan is different.
To confirm your coverage, it may be helpful to contact your provider and ask:
Do you cover services provided by a Registered Social Worker?
How much is covered per session?
How much coverage do I have remaining for the year?
-
I do not offer direct billing at this time.
Payment is due on the day of your session. A receipt will be provided through Jane after each session for you to submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement.
-
I do not currently offer sliding scale fees. I understand cost can be an important factor when choosing therapy, and I encourage you to check your insurance coverage before booking.
Crisis Support
-
I do not provide crisis services, and my inbox is not monitored 24/7.
If you are in crisis, please contact 9-8-8: Suicide Crisis Helpline or Reach Out 24/7 for London & Middlesex support: reachout247.ca
If you are experiencing an emergency, please call 9-1-1 or go to your local emergency department.
Your questions matter, and sometimes the best way to find answers is through conversation.
Every person’s journey is unique, and I offer a free 20-minute consultation as a relaxed, no-pressure way to connect and see whether working together feels like a good fit.
